PFT: Suh's ex-teammate says Lion's 'out of control'

Ryan Mathews, Nick RoachAP

We handle the biggest injury news all day in the rumor mill.?

The rest goes right here, in America?s most popular injury segment that always listens to the National Anthem.

1. Kevin Kolb is officially questionable after being limited in practice all week with his toe injury. ?We won?t know his status until gametime, but signs are pointing towards Kolb playing.

2. The Rams? two best defenders are questionable.?Linebacker James Laurinaitis (foot) and defensive end Chris Long (ankle) practiced in a limited fashion during the week, so they should play.

3. The Bills have a sadly big list of starters that are out this week. Some of the players are already on injured reserve, but we?ll reprint here: Running back?Fred Jackson (fibula), wideout Donald Jones (ankle), kicker Rian Lindell (shoulder), cornerback Terrence McGee (knee), and safety George Wilson (neck) are out. ?Backup wide receiver Naaman Roosevelt (shoulder) is also out.

4. The Jets are healthy, with the exception of kick returner?Jeremy Kerley (knee) and running back LaDainian Tomlinson (knee). Both are questionable, but they didn?t practice all week.

5. Tight end Dallas Clark (fibula) is out once again. Running back Joseph Addai (hamstring) should be back after practicing fully all week.

6. The Raiders will be without?wide receiver Jacoby Ford (foot), running back Darren McFadden (foot), and defensive end Jarvis Moss (hamstring). ?Half the team is questionable, including two players that didn?t practice all week: running back?Taiwan Jones (hamstring) and wide receiver Denarius Moore (foot).

7. A few extra days off did the Broncos some good. The entire active roster should be available to face San Diego.

8. The Chargers got some good news on Friday. Running back Ryan Mathews (knee) is probable despite missing practice Thursday, and their best pass rusher Shaun Phillips (foot) was upgraded to questionable this week.

The bad news:?Defensive end Luis Castillo (tibia), wideout Malcom Floyd (hip), and tackle Marcus McNeill (neck) are all still out. Two other guards are doubtful. The offensive line is in bad shape.

9. Andre Johnson (hamstring) is officially probable as he returns from his lengthy injury. ?He should be happy about his matchup with Jacksonville because . . .

10. The Jaguars defense is banged up. Cornerback Derek Cox went on injured reserve Friday. Fellow starter Rashean Mathis is already there. Defensive line starters?Terrance Knighton (ankle) and Matt Roth (concussion) are both out.

11. The Falcons will be short in the secondary. Luckily, they are playing the Vikings. ?Cornerback Kelvin Hayden (toe) is out and cornerback Brent Grimes (knee)?is questionable despite not practicing all week.

12. Patriots wideout?Chad Ochocinco (hamstring) is officially questionable after missing practice Friday. There are nine other Patriots that are questionable, but they all practiced in a limited fashion during the week. Linebacker Brandon Spikes (knee) remains out.

13. Redskins receiver Santana Moss (hand) is back in the mix. He?s probable.

14. The Steelers list linebacker?LaMarr Woodley (hamstring) as questionable, but there is doubt locally that he?ll suit up.

(AP) ? Egypt's military rulers picked a prime minister from ousted leader Hosni Mubarak's era to head the next government, according to state television, a choice that will almost certainly intensify criticism by tens of thousands of protesters accusing the generals of trying to extend the old guard and demanding they step down immediately.

Kamal el-Ganzouri, 78, served as prime minister between 1996 and 1999 and was deputy prime minister and planning minister before that. He also was a provincial governor under the late President Anwar Sadat.

"Illegitimate, illegitimate!" chanted the crowds at Cairo's central Tahrir Square on hearing news of el-Ganzouri's appointment.

"Not only was he prime minister under Mubarak, but also part of the old regime for a total of 18 years," said protester Mohammed el-Fayoumi, 29. "Why did we have a revolution then?"

The announcement followed a meeting late Thursday between el-Ganzouri and senior military ruler Field Marshal Hussein Tantawi. Tantawi was Mubarak's defense minister of 20 years and served in the government headed by el-Ganzouri.

El-Ganzouri will replace Essam Sharaf, who resigned this week after nearly nine months in office amid deadly clashes between police and protesters calling for the military to immediately step down.

Sharaf was criticized for being weak and beholden to the generals. The television announcement said el-Ganzouri will enjoy "authority," but did not elaborate.

El-Ganzouri's appointment was likely to deepen the anger of the protesters, already seething over the military's perceived reluctance to dismantle the legacy of Mubarak's 29-year rule.

Protesters chanting, "Leave, leave!" filled up Cairo's Tahrir Square on Friday for what has been dubbed by organizers as "The Last Chance Million-Man Protest" aimed at forcing the military council to yield power.

Pro-reform leader and Nobel peace laureate Mohamed ElBaradei was mobbed by hundreds of supporters as he arrived in the square and took part in Friday prayers, leaving shortly afterward.

"He is here to support the revolutionaries," said protester Ahmed Awad, 35. "He came to see for himself the tragedy caused by the military."

Swelling crowds of demonstrators chanted, "The people want to bring down the marshal", in reference to Tantawi, who took over the reins of power from Mubarak.

The rally comes one day after the military offered an apology for the killing of nearly 40 protesters in five days of deadly clashes, mostly centered around Tahrir Square. This was the longest spate of uninterrupted violence since the 18-day uprising that toppled Mubarak on Feb. 11. The streets were relatively calm on Friday as a truce negotiated Thursday in Cairo continued to hold.

The military also has said that parliamentary elections due to start Monday will go ahead on schedule despite the unrest in Cairo and a string of other cities to the north and south of the capital.

Protesters in Cairo's Tahrir Square ? angry at the military for failing to stabilize the country, salvage the economy or bring democracy ? say they will not leave the sprawling plaza until the generals step down in favor of a civilian presidential council. Their show of resolve resembles that of the rallies which forced Mubarak to give up power.

The military has rejected calls to immediately step down, saying its claim to power is supported by the warm welcome given to troops who took over the streets from the discredited police early in the anti-Mubarak uprising as well as an overwhelming endorsement for constitutional amendments they proposed in a March referendum.

Tantawi has offered another referendum on whether his military council should step down immediately.

Such a vote, activists say, would divide the nation and likely open the door for a deal between the military and political groups, particularly the Muslim Brotherhood. Egypt's largest and best organized group, the Brotherhood is notorious for its opportunism and thirst for power. It was empowered after the fall of Mubarak, regaining legitimacy after spending nearly 60 years as an outlawed group.

Advances | More Science Cover Image: December 2011 Scientific American MagazineSee Inside

Each year we poll scientists and educators on ideas for books, puzzles and toys that foster inquiry. This season's picks range from a top that never stops spinning to a build-it-yourself skull.

Image: Photograph by Lucas Zarebinski

1. Your Body puzzle
$24.95 at fatbraintoys.com; ages 4 and up
A five-layer birch puzzle lets kids peer inside the human body, revealing the digestive tract, nerves and skeleton. Katy Shepard, a Ph.D. candidate in neuroscience at Emory University, says her three-year-old cousin received this puzzle after he pointed to his skin and asked, ?What comes next??

2. Life Cycle Stacking Blocks
$19.95 at forsmallhands.com; ages 2 to 6
Paperboard boxes that stack nearly three feet high and feature beautiful illustrations of the life cycles of the butterfly and frog are accompanied by an informative poem, says Julie Frey, a fifth grade teacher at Stuard Elementary School in Aledo, Tex.

3. Skull puzzle
$23 at theevolutionstore.com; ages 8 and up
This 39-piece 3-D puzzle comes with a removable brain. ?This puzzle is educational, challenging and, most important, fun,? says Kent Kirshenbaum, a chemistry professor at New York University. ?Bonus: the jaw swings open and shut hauntingly after you complete it.?

4. Bones: Skeletons and How They Work
by Steve Jenkins (Scholastic, 2010); ages 7 and up
Michelle Nijhuis, a biologist and author, recommended this book and the two following ones. (For more of her suggestions, go to lastwordonnothing.com.) Bones, she writes, has fantastic illustrations and ?is also great for inspiring hands-on research.?

5. Far from Shore: Chronicles of an Open Ocean Voyage
by Sophie Webb (Houghton Mifflin, 2011); ages 9 to 12
This book chronicles the author?s four-month-long Pacific research voyage. ?Webb describes her work in some depth, but she emphasizes not the results but the experience: the starlit nights on deck, the sightings of dolphins and whales and seabirds, and daily life with her fellow scientists,? Nijhuis writes.

6. Tuesday
by David Wiesner (Clarion, 1997); ages 5 to 8
?Late one Tuesday evening a mob of frogs flies through town on lily pads, disappearing as quickly as it came. Why? This almost wordless story doesn?t say, leaving kids free to form their own theories about spontaneous frog flight,? Nijhuis says.

7. Evolution: How We and All Living Things Came to Be
by Daniel Loxton (2010); $18.95 at kidscanpress.com; ages 8 to 13
Eugenie Scott, executive director of the National Center for Science Education, touts this book as ?an excellent introduction to a topic not frequently covered in children?s books. There?s more to evolution than dinosaurs, after all!?

Closer to a cure for eczema

Thursday, November 24, 2011

Scientists have found that a strain of yeast implicated in inflammatory skin conditions, including eczema, can be killed by certain peptides and could potentially provide a new treatment for these debilitating skin conditions. This research is published today in the Society for Applied Microbiology's journal, Letters in Applied Microbiology.

20% of children in the UK suffer from atopic eczema and whilst this usually clears up in adolescence, 7% of adults will continue to suffer throughout their lifetime. Furthermore, this type of eczema, characterized by dry, itchy, flaking skin, is increasing in prevalence. Whilst the cause of eczema remains unknown, one known trigger factor is the yeast Malassezia sympodialis.

This strain of yeast is one of the most common skin yeasts in both healthy individuals and those suffering from eczema. The skin barrier is more fragile and often broken in those suffering from such skin conditions, and this allows the yeast to cause infection which then further exacerbates the condition. Scientists at Karolinska Institute in Sweden looked for a way to kill Malassezia sympodialis without harming healthy human cells.

The researchers looked at the effect on the yeast of 21 peptides which had either; cell-penetrating or antimicrobial properties. Cell-penetrating peptides are often investigated as drug delivery vectors and are able to cross the cell membrane, although the exact mechanism for this is unknown. Antimicrobial peptides, on the other hand, are natural antibiotics and kill many different types of microbe including some bacteria, fungi and viruses.

Tina Holm and her colleagues at Stockholm University and Karolinska Institute, added these different peptides types to separate yeast colonies and assessed the toxicity of each peptide type to the yeast. They found that six of the 21 peptides they tested successfully killed the yeast without damaging the membrane of keratinocytes, human skin cells.

Tina commented "Many questions remain to be solved before these peptides can be used in humans. However, the appealing combination of being toxic to the yeast at low concentrations whilst sparing human cells makes them very promising as antifungal agents. We hope that these peptides in the future can be used to ease the symptoms of patients suffering from atopic eczema and significantly increase their quality of life."

The next step will be to further examine the mechanism(s) used by the peptides to kill yeast cells, in order to develop a potential treatment for eczema and other skin conditions.

Children have expensive taste: iPad tops kids? holiday wish lists (Yahoo! News)

Apple's tablet is a top request from kids of all ages

Apple's iPad is one of the?top-selling gadgets of all time, so it should come as no surprise that it tops many wish lists this holiday season. But what may surprise you when it comes to those hoping to see an Apple tablet under the tree this year is just how young they skew. According to a?new report from the Nielsen group, a whopping 44% of?kids between the ages of 6 and 12 are interested in getting an iPad within the next 6 months, making it the most desired gadget amongst that age group.

Last year's study showed that 31% of kids were wishing for the?iPad. The huge jump in interest could be due to effective marketing campaigns, or simply that more children in that age group have had a chance to go hands-on with one in the past year. Other Apple products are enjoying similar buzz with youngsters, with 30% of kids wanting an iPod Touch, and 27% intent on?getting an iPhone. Further down the list are more common wish list items like game consoles and desktop computers.

Kids in the 13-17 age group are similarly excited about Apple's products, with the iPad still coming out on top with 24% purchase intent. The iPhone shows up a bit further down the list with 15%, being beaten out by the likes of televisions, blu-ray players, and e-readers. So if you're still looking for the perfect gift for a kid on your shopping list ? and you're feeling particularly generous this year ? an iPad just might make their day.

Singer Robin Gibb diagnosed with liver cancer

Robin Gibb battling liver cancer

Some shocking and sad news: Bee Gees'?own Robin Gibb is suffering from liver cancer. The legendary musician shocked fans earlier this month when he stepped out looking skeletal ??and many speculated he was ill.

"I'm feeling great, absolutely great," the "How Deep is your Love"?singer said last month after an appearance on Britain?s The Alan Titchmarsh Show. However, sources close to Gibb said he's been battling liver cancer for several months.

"We should be thinking about Robin's incredible talent as a singer and songwriter and the wonderful gift of music that he and his brothers gave to the world," the friend added. It's difficult, given his gaunt state and the previous sad death of his brother ??and band mate ??Maurice Gibb in 2003. In a recent interview, Gibb said his older brother's death was "something I haven?t accepted," according to the Daily Mail.

More celebrity health news?>>

"I just imagine he is out there somewhere and I will bump into him one day," he added. The youngest Gibb brother, Andy Gibb, passed away in 1988 from a massive cocaine addiction.

We?ve contacted Gibb's rep to get more information on the liver cancer claim.?

The Bee Gees

Liver cancer is the latest blow to Robin's health in recent months. He had to cancel several appearances due to extreme stomach pain.

"The gastroenterologist told me my intestine was two hours from bursting," he revealed. "You realize that however much you don?t think about death ??or think 'that's for other people' ??you're just an organism living from day to day. I'm just grateful I'm here. Losing people makes you realize you've got to grab life ??not put things off. I don't have too much faith in destiny, or an afterlife. This is it."

Here's hoping Gibb can beat his illness and get back to good health soon.

One killed as Egyptian police, protesters clash (Reuters)

CAIRO (Reuters) ? At least one person was killed and more than 650 wounded in clashes between riot police and protesters in Cairo's Tahrir square on Saturday, official said, after a protest demanding the ruling military transfer power swiftly to a civilian government.

Protests also erupted in other cities, including Alexandria and Suez, witnesses said.

Egypt holds its first parliamentary election, from November 28, since president Hosni Mubarak was toppled in a popular uprising in February and parties and the ruling military are jostling for position.

Police pulled down the tents of about 100 protesters who had camped in the square overnight after a demonstration on Friday of about 50,000 people, mostly Islamists, against the military leadership.

That prompted around 5,000 protesters to return to the square and clashes erupted. Police fired rubber bullets and buildings and two cars in the square were set on fire, witnesses said. A third vehicle, close to the Arab League's headquarters, was also on fire.

"The people want to topple the regime!" hundreds of youths chanted as they rushed toward a line of police.

State news agency MENA cited the health ministry's spokesman as saying 676 people had been hurt and Ahmed Mahmoud, a 23-year-old demonstrator, died in hospital after being shot.

Riot police, who used tear gas to clear the area in the early evening, later fired more tear gas at protesters who had regained control of the square, witnesses said. Police beat protesters with batons while protesters broke off chunks of cement from sidewalks to throw at the police.

"We are fighting them non-stop," shouted one protester.

Egyptian state television said Prime Minister Essam Sharaf called on protesters in Tahrir to clear the square.

The Muslim Brotherhood's Freedom and Justice Party said it "denounced the break-up of the Tahrir sit-in by force. (This is) reminiscent of the practices of the defunct regime's Interior Ministry."

The April 6th Youth Movement said it opposed the use of force against peaceful protesters and demanded the interior minister quit.

The demonstrators denounced Field Marshal Mohamed Hussein Tantawi, the head of Egypt's ruling military council, while some criticised the Muslim Brotherhood, whom they accused of working to further their own political ends.

"We are not political parties and we hate the Brotherhood who gave up on the revolution and the people," Medhat Fawzy said. "We are Egyptian youth," he added, flashing victory signs and chanting "down down Tantawi."

In the northern port city of Alexandria demonstrators chanted against the military council: "This is their understanding of change, they beat our brothers in Tahrir!"

In the eastern city of Suez, protesters tore down banners of members of Mubarak's disbanded National Democratic Party who are running in the election.

"TROUBLEMAKERS"

State television said 40 of the wounded were police officers and said "18 troublemakers" had been arrested.

Friday's rally appeared to be the biggest Islamist challenge to military rule since the largely secular uprising that toppled Mubarak. The demonstration was mostly comprised of Brotherhood members and their harder-line Salafi rivals.

Protesters expressed anger at a draft constitution that Deputy Prime Minister Ali al-Silmi showed to political groups earlier this month which would give the army exclusive authority over its internal affairs and budget.

The election could be disrupted if parties and the government fail to resolve the row over the draft constitution that had denied parliamentary oversight of the army, potentially allowing it to defy an elected government.

As clashes raged in Tahrir square, al-Silmi and the Brotherhood appeared to be negotiating, through press statements and the state news agency, on percentages of members of parliament (MPs) needed to approve the assembly that will write the constitution.

MENA reported that al-Silmi had amended some clauses of the constitutional proposal, including one to say Egypt is a "democratic state" instead of "democratic civil state," a move likely to anger liberals who fear that a parliamentary majority could seek to turn Egypt into an Islamic state.

Al-Silmi said the committee chosen to write the constitution would not be confined to the larger groups in parliament to ensure "a constitution that reflects national consensus and receives the consent of all segments of society."

Political analyst Ezzedine Fishere said he did not expect the amendments to appease Islamist groups.

"(Islamists) see that they will get a majority in parliament and hence want total freedom in choosing the constitutional committee and writing the constitution," he said.

Analysts say Islamists could win 40 percent of parliament seats, with a big portion going to the Brotherhood.

"What is happening now is a showdown between the two factions ... an on-the-ground confrontation with each party trying to enforce its will, the military council from one end and the Islamist currents from the other," Fishere said.

MENA reported that al-Silmi had amended the constitutional proposal to say members of the constituent assembly writing the constitution would be chosen by a "majority" of elected MPs instead of his earlier announcement that they would be chosen by a "two-thirds majority."

Mariners' Halman killed, brother arrested (Reuters)

ROTTERDAM (Reuters) ? Seattle Mariners outfielder Greg Halman was stabbed to death in Rotterdam on Monday and his brother has been arrested in connection with the incident.

Dutch-born Halman, 24, was signed as a free agent by Seattle in 2004 and after a long spell in the minor leagues he was called up to the majors last year.

"A 24-year-old died this morning in a stabbing and we have arrested the 22-year-old brother of the victim," a Rotterdam police spokesman said.

Dutch television station NOS-TV said Halman's family had been informed.

The Dutchman helped Netherlands win the 2007 European Baseball Championship.

Halman had helped boost baseball in Europe by holding coaching clinics with youngsters when not playing for the Mariners.

He had featured in 35 games for the Mariners last season, scoring seven runs and holding a batting average of .230.

Baffled by euro crisis, companies look inwards (Reuters)

BARCELONA, Spain (Reuters) ? Few companies are making plans for a break-up of the euro zone or a deeper debt crisis and many believe they could yet escape unscathed if executive views at an investor conference this week are any guide.

Instead, most companies are responding to the prolonged economic uncertainty in the euro zone and the United States by turning inwards and focusing on things they can control. A few appeared to be in outright denial of a crisis.

The mood at Morgan Stanley's annual technology, media and telecoms conference in the Spanish city of Barcelona, was surprisingly upbeat, with many of the speakers comparing the current situation favorably to the Lehman crisis of 2008.

"At the end of 2008 and the beginning of 2009 we had a cliff, and suddenly we had clients cutting 15, 20 percent. What we have currently is not so dramatic," said Maurice Levy, chief executive of ad agency Publicis.

Most of the hundred or so company executives focused on bright spots in their industry, such as a cyclical upturn expected in the semiconductor industry, while others looked to cut more costs.

Their apparent lack of concern may be a factor of the sectors they are in, where structural turbulence is the principal worry. The Internet continues to threaten traditional media, perpetual technology advances rapidly commoditize new gadgets and equipment, and incumbent Western telecoms carriers are grappling with stagnant domestic markets.

But Martin Sorrell, CEO of the world's biggest advertising group WPP, put it down partly to a kind of fatigue with constant crisis.

"I think people who run businesses have just sort of lost patience really," he told Reuters on the sidelines of the conference.

"You can't wait for the problems to be solved because you have a business to run. So you try and do the best you can in an uncertain environment."

WHO KNOWS?

In Europe, politicians and the European Central Bank are each urging each other to act faster to tackle an escalating debt crisis that began with Greece but now risks engulfing Italy, Spain and even France.

The crisis is threatening to derail a burgeoning economic recovery in the United States, where a so-called "super committee" is trying to reach a deficit-cutting deal to avert automatic countrywide public spending cuts.

"Is there going to be a new government in every European country? What is it going to do? Is there going to be austerity? Who knows?" asked John Wren, CEO of U.S. advertising agency Omnicom.

"If the governments are not very bright and start sending messages out that, yes, we have serious problems and, yes, we will all solve them together, who knows what happens. But the things we can control, the things that our clients can control, we're pretty confident about that."

Omnicom reported a 13 percent rise in third-quarter sales last month. But when asked about the outlook for 2012, Wren said: "We fully expect that growth will be there, but I can't really give you a solid projection."

Sorrell said the uncertainty would likely benefit advertising agencies in the short term, as companies put some of their cash piles accumulated in the new spirit of conservatism since the Lehman crash to work.

"When you're faced with these uncertainties, you don't want to take a risk, particularly post-Lehman. Boards... are terrified of making mistakes," he said. "So you don't invest in capacity but you do invest in brand."

Sorrell forecast that WPP's organic sales growth would slow but not crash -- to 4 percent next year from an expected 5 percent this year.

WORRY

Telecoms operators are already being hit by cuts in consumer spending, especially in southern Europe where many have introduced new, cheaper tariffs.

As fears grow that the crisis will seep into the core of the euro zone, France Telecom's Deputy CEO Gervais Pellissier told Reuters his company was not affected yet but he was worried.

"Who would not worry? he asked. "This is not a bank crisis, it is a sovereign debt crisis that can be solved only by more tax or more inflation or less spending. All of those three factors will have an impact."

Operators in mature, western markets have, however, already been expanding into faster-growth economies for some time as growth has slowed at home.

Nordic carriers Telenor and TeliaSonera have been among the most aggressive, and are also shielded by being outside the euro zone, although much of their trade depends on it.

Telenor's chief financial officer said his company's Swedish business could be affected by the crisis, although Swedish operator TeliaSonera's finance chief said there was little evidence of impact there so far.

"In Sweden, when you look around the area where we are situated with our office in the center of Stockholm it is very difficult to even get a table for lunch," he said.

WHAT CRISIS?

In Germany, whose economy is still growing and which has yet to feel the impact of weakness in its export markets, spending is still strong, said Axel Springer, publisher of Europe's best-selling tabloid, Bild.

"I'm still optimistic for the economy because... everybody talks about the crisis but in the real industry it has not yet arrived and there is no reason why it should arrive," said CFO Lothar Lanz.

"Perhaps in springtime everybody will say: 'Where is the crisis?' The same as people say now in Germany," he said. "If you look at the car industry, the major industries in Germany, they are all doing extremely well, still."

Carmaker Daimler, however, last week became the first major German exporter to cast doubt on the wisdom of keeping Greece in the euro zone, in a signal that Germany's feeling of immunity may be waning.

Logitech, the world's biggest maker of computer mice, called for politicians to do more, but suggested that for now weaker consumer spending was limited to big-ticket items.

"As a citizen, I am increasingly worried about the economy. I am praying European politicians can do something about the euro. German politicians could do a better job explaining this to their citizens," he said.

"As CEO of Logitech, I am less concerned. Our price points are less impacted. Our products are sold below check-with-your-spouse threshold."

Bahrain: Hundreds Mourn After Boy Is Killed In Demonstration

MANAMA, Bahrain ? Hundreds of mourners gathered in Bahrain on Saturday for the funeral of a young protester killed by a police vehicle as security forces were dispersing Shiite demonstrators rallying against Sunni rulers near an American naval base.

The violence occurred just days before an international panel is due to release a highly anticipated report on the unrest that has killed more than 30 people since February.

Bahrain has seen months of anti-government protests and punishing crackdowns in the tiny but strategically important Gulf country, the home of the U.S. Navy's 5th Fleet, that began when the country's Shiite majority started campaigning for greater rights and freedoms.

Hundreds of protesters, opposition leaders and Shiite professionals like lawyers, doctors and nurses have been detained and tried on anti-state crimes in a special security court since the beginning of protests ignited by uprisings sweeping the Arab world.

Security forces have clashed with protesters almost daily since authorities launched a crackdown on dissent in March.

The protester's uncle told The Associated Press his 16-year-old nephew, Ali Youssef Bagdar, died after a police vehicle ran him over during a demonstration early Saturday in the Juffair area of the capital Manama. The uncle, Ibrahim Ali Bagdar, said he rushed to the area with the boy's father, but police cordoned the site off and would not let anybody approach.

"Our boy was dead and they left him laying on the street for hours," the uncle said before his nephew's funeral in Bahrain's oil hub of Sitra on Saturday.

A report by the state-run Bahrain News Agency said a police vehicle skidded into a group of "rioters... committing acts of sabotage" due to an oil spill on the road, killing the boy. The BNA report said authorities are investigating the incident that occurred just before 1:00 a.m. Saturday.

The report by The Bahrain Independent Commission of Inquiry, which has been probing alleged abuses during the unrest, is due out on Wednesday.

The five-member panel is headed by Mahmoud Cherif Bassiouni, an Egyptian-born professor of international criminal law and a former member of U.N. human rights panels. It was set up in July with the consent of Bahrain's rulers.

Over the past months, the panel received more than 8,000 complaints, testimonies and documents. Its members have interviewed more than 5,000 witnesses and alleged victims of the unrest, including detainees, police personnel, doctors and journalists.

Bahrain imposed martial law in March and invited into the country 1,500 troops from Saudi Arabia and other Gulf neighbors who accuse the regional Shiite power, Iran of aiding the unrest.

UFC 139 interview: 39-year-old Cung Le ready to come out of the shadows

Cung Le has waited for a long time to finally show off his dynamic striking game in the UFC. The moment arrives tomorrow night as a guy that was a star from 1997-2004 in the kickboxing world is introduced to the casual fans of MMA. Le admitted there may be some nerves as he steps into the Octagon.

"For my first MMA fight in San Jose, I threw up in the back. So I hope it doesn't happen this time, but I'm prepared for whatever," Le told Cagewriter. "I'm just excited. I think my first time, I was more like 'what about my joints? what about the small gloves? But now, hey it's go time."

Le faces the legendary Wanderlei Silva at UFC 139. Believe it or not, Le is actually four years older than Silva, but he's a minus-150 favorite. Silva, with 45 fights under his belt has absorbed a lot more punishment over the years. This is MMA fight No. 9 for Le, who knows Silva can still be vicious in spite of losing six of his last eight.

"You know Wanderlei is always going to be dangerous. He fights with a lot of heart and he's one of those fighters you have to put away because he's a going to keep coming all the way through. Kind of like a Scott Smith with more power."

Le suffered the only loss of his MMA career against Smith in 2009. The Vietnamese kickboxer was destroying Smith for twelve and a half minutes until the American landed one punch that changed the fight. Silva can do the same thing. That's what makes this fight so interesting. Le's kicking game may pick apart Silva, but the Brazilian always has that one-punch knockout power in his back pocket.

PFT: Broncos' McGahee questionable for Jets game

Pittsburgh Steelers v Cincinnati BengalsAP

Rosenthal does a fairly good job (I can?t give him to big of a compliment or he?ll get soft) with the things to know about the Friday injury report, especially when the number in the title actually matches the number in the body of the article.

But the injury watch begins on Wednesday, when the first clear indications emerge as to the men who may miss the next game.

Here?s a summary of the players with widely recognizable names who didn?t practice on Wednesday, the first full-blown day of the work week in preparation for Sunday.

For the Cardinals, quarterback Kevin Kolb didn?t miss practice.? He participated on a limited basis with turf toe.? Running back Beanie Wells (knee) and tight end Todd Heap (hamstring) were among the Cardinals who didn?t practice.

Bills receiver Stevie Johnson did not practice, due to a shoulder injury.

Panthers tight end Jeremy Shockey (ribs) did not practice.

Lions running back Jahvid Best (concussion) did not practice; quarterback Matthew Stafford (finger) fully participated.

Bengals receiver A.J. Green (knee) did not practice, along with cornerback Nate Clements (knee) and cornerback Pacman Jones (groin), among others.

Cowboys receiver Miles Austin (hamstring) did not practice.? Dallas running back Felix Jones (ankle) practiced on a limited basis.

Redskins linebacker London Fletcher (ankle) and safety LaRon Landry (Achilles) were among the players who did not practice.

The Browns continue to practice without running back Peyton Hillis (hamstring) and running back Montarrio Hardesty (calf).? Receiver Mohamed Massaquoi (concussion) practiced on a limited basis.

Players missing practice for the Raiders included receiver Jacoby Ford (foot), kicker Sebastian Janikowski (left hamstring), running back Darren McFadden (foot), and defensive lineman Richard Seymour (knee).

Defensive end Julius Peppers (knee) skipped practice in Chicago.? Running back Matt Forte (shoulder) and receiver Devin Hester (ankle) practiced on a limited basis.

Buccaneers defensive tackle Albert Haynesworth (knee) missed practice.? (Get used to it, Raheem.)

Falcons receiver Julio Jones missed practice, due to the hamstring injury he aggravated on Sunday.

For the Eagles, tackle King Dunlap (concussion), receiver Jeremy Maclin (shoulder,?hamstring), cornerback Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie (ankle), and quarterback Michael Vick (ribs) did not practice.

Giants running back Ahmad Bradshaw again missed practice, with a foot injury.

Another report will be issued Thursday.? The out/doubtful/questionable/probable labels will be applied on Friday.

Stocks fall broadly as oil tops $100 a barrel (AP)

NEW YORK ? Stocks fell broadly in midday trading Wednesday as the price of oil topped $100 a barrel for the first time since July.

The jump in the price of crude could weaken the already U.S. fragile economy by raising costs for gas, heating oil and airline fuel. Oil futures jumped 2.7 percent to $102 a barrel as U.S. supplies dropped and a deal for a new pipeline threatened to cut them even more.

The Dow Jones industrial average fell nearly 125 points shortly after the opening bell but trimmed about half of those losses by midday. All 10 industry groups in the S&P 500 index fell.

The Dow was down 68 points, or 0.6 percent, to 12,026 at noon Eastern. Aluminum maker Alcoa Inc. fell the most of the 30 stocks in the Dow, 2 percent.

The S&P 500 fell 7, or 0.6 percent, to 1,251. The Nasdaq composite lost 15, or 0.6 percent, to 2,671.

U.S. economic reports were mixed. Output at the nation's factories, utilities and mines rose at the fastest pace in three months in October, the Federal Reserve said. Production of autos and parts surged 3.1 percent.

Consumer prices largely held steady last month. The Consumer Price Index dropped 0.1 percent in October, led by a steep decline in gas prices. An index of builder sentiment rose to the highest level since May 2010, but is still well below a level consistent with a strong housing market.

Concerns lingered about Europe's debt crisis as well. Greece's new prime minister, Lucas Papademos, faces a confidence vote later Wednesday. His government must pass unpopular austerity measures to receive the next round of emergency loans.

The vote comes one day after reports that the European Union economy grew by just 0.2 percent between July and September, a sign that Europe may be headed for a recession. Together, the countries in the European Union are the world's largest economy and a key source of revenue for companies in the Standard and Poor's 500 index.

Borrowing rates remained dangerously high for Italy and other large European countries like Spain and France, the latest signal that Europe's debt woes could be spreading from smaller countries like Greece and Portugal and into the industrial core of the region.

The yield on Italy's benchmark 10-year government bond was 6.99 percent, a level widely seen as unsustainable. Comparable rates for Spain and France were 6.37 percent and 3.69 percent. That's far above the 1.81 percent rate that Germany, Europe's strongest economy, has to pay to borrow money on debt markets.

In corporate news, Target Corp. gained 0.1 percent after sales growth and an improvement in its credit card business helped the retailer beat Wall Street's profit estimates. Abercrombie & Fitch Co. plunged 14 percent after the company reported earnings that fell far short of Wall Street's expectations. The company said rising costs for cotton and other commodities cut into profits.

Dell Inc. dropped 2.5 percent after the company said late Tuesday that its revenues will be held back by an industry-wide shortage of hard drives.

Downtown Business Owners Protest Obama-Endorsed #Occupy ...

Despite the months-long cries from taxpaying, hardworking producers, the morally bankrupt and depraved Mayor of New York, Ground Zero mosqueteer Bloomberg, is putting New Yorkers at risk by sanctioning the lawless moochers and looters. The park is a pigsty, disease and filth abound, the cops are on overtime and businesses are suffering. Doomberg calls this free speech. The intepretation of these protests as symbolic of free speech is wrong. There is a distinction between speech and action. They do not have the right to co-opt and take over public parks or shut down public streets.

It is public property. They do not have the right to do what they want with it whenever they want.

And thanks to the Mayor, the invading occupiers #OWS 'leaders' announced today their plans to rachet up their wild antics ? vowing to wreak havoc on Thursday by shutting down Wall Street and the subways to mark the renegade group?s two-month takeover of Zuccotti.

According to their Web site, the day will include ?Mass, Non-violent Direct Action? to ?Shut Down Wall Street? at 7 a.m., ?Occupy the Subways? in all five boroughs at 3 p.m. and ?Take the Square,? referring to Foley Square, at 5 p.m.

One protester said the plan to ?Occupy the Subway? is an effort to bring the OWS message to the outerboroughs.

Mayor Bloomberg dismissed the notion that Wall Street, for one, would be shut down.

?The New York Stock Exchange will open on time. People will be able to get to work, you can rest assured,? Hizzoner said.

Bloomberg reiterated his support for the protesters? right to free speech but said he was aware that business owners ? about 10 of whom rallied against the protest today at City Hall ? have legitimate complaints.

?We?re not going to allow people to stop commerce and to stop people?s right to go around and express themselves. No one group has the right to protest. They all have the right to protest,? Bloomberg said. (Fox Nation)

Downtown Business Owners Say Occupy Wall Street Protests Hurt Their Revenue NY1

A half-dozen Lower Manhattan business owners gathered by City Hall today speak out against the Occupy Wall Street protesters, saying the ongoing protest has hurt their revenue.

For almost two months, more than 100 protesters have camped out at Zuccotti Park.

Nearby eatery owners said while the Zuccotti Park demonstrators are calling for job creation, their constant presence has actually resulted in job losses for the businesses.

"People who are working for us have a right to their jobs, and you can't go and usurp other people's rights. That's a problem," said Marc Epstein of the Milk Street Cafe. "Right now, we've laid off 25 of the 70 who are at risk. This doesn't make any sense."

While activists get ready for winter, some of the businesses around the park know that season is usually the slowest time of the year for revenue.

"We're frustrated because this situation does not seem to be going to go away," said Stacey Tzortzatos of Panini Cafe.

A spokesperson for Occupy Wall Street, Patrick Bruner, blamed police barricades for the loss of foot traffic and said other businesses are doing better because of the encampment.

Urban Infidel has this:?

Tonight I went to the press conference for New York businesses against OWS Zucotti Square on the steps of City Hall.

A group of local business owners and residents organized a press conference to express their thoughts on evicting the squatters currently occupying Zucotti Square. Over the last two months the zoo-like atmosphere, the crime, the drumming, the garbage, the smell and lawbreaking has cost local businesses nearly $500,000.00 and workers are being laid off.

Tiger and ex-caddie in the same match (AP)

MELBOURNE, Australia ? The Presidents Cup wasted no time delivering the match everyone was talking about ? Tiger Woods against ex-caddie Steve Williams in the opening session at Royal Melbourne.

Oh, yes, and three other players will join them.

U.S. captain Fred Couples and International captain Greg Norman, hopeful of putting an end to a three-month soap opera involving Woods and Williams, put them together in the last of six foursomes matches Thursday.

"I think it's great for the tournament," Norman said. "It needed to be done."

Lest anyone forget, Williams will be carrying the bag of Adam Scott, not hitting any golf shots.

On paper it will be Woods and Steve Stricker, undefeated as a tandem two years ago at Harding Park, against K.J. Choi and Scott, the popular Australian who hired Williams after Woods fired his caddie of 12 years this summer.

For sheer drama, it's more about Woods and Williams.

It will be the first time they have been in the same group of any tournament since Woods officially fired him in late July. Norman expects nothing but a good match between four players, with four other guys carrying their bags.

"I'm sure Freddie and I ? everybody ? we want to put this behind us," Norman said. "It's a dead issue as far as we're concerned. There's no animosity between any of the players. I know it's good fodder. People like to talk about it in the media. But from our perspective, it's dead and gone. And we would like to keep that way going forward."

The acrimonious split became evident when Scott won the Bridgestone Invitational, and Williams allowed himself to be interviewed on the 18th green at Firestone and called it "the best win of my life." This from a caddie who was with Woods for 13 of his majors.

While getting roasted in Shanghai two weeks ago at a caddies party, Williams was asked about the interview while accepting his mock "Celebration of the Year" award and said, "It was my aim to shove it up his black a------."

Williams later apologized, Scott said it was enough for him, and even Woods tried to close the ordeal by saying they shook hands in a gym in Sydney and saying that Williams was not a racist.

Norman and Couples said the match wasn't planned, although both could have chosen to avoid it.

In the Presidents Cup, each captain takes turn putting his team in one of the six matches. With each announced match, anticipation kept building until it came down to Couples.

Norman had put K.T. Kim and Y.E. Yang in the fifth match. Couples could have inserted Woods and Stricker, but instead went with Hunter Mahan and David Toms. That sealed it.

"Who's left?" U.S. assistant captain Jay Haas as the room filled with laughter.

Norman said he did discuss it with Scott, and with his two assistant captains. The idea was to get it over with.

"If we had to diffuse anything and just get this thing over and done with, wouldn't you rather have it sooner than later?" Norman said. "Because I personally wouldn't have wanted to be sitting down at the singles and everybody is playing a really tight match and it comes down to the last group or the second to last group, and all of this pressure is coming on because it's the first time the two met."

"Adam and Tiger are good friends," Norman said. "It's got nothing to do with Adam and Tiger, and at the end of the day, the atmosphere that will exist walking to the first tee will be exactly the same if none of this took place in the past week."

Couples also downplayed any hard feelings, trying to present this as any other match.

"I think it worked out awesome for everybody involved to have Adam and Tiger play," Couples said. "As we said all along, they are still very good friends, and I think it's an exciting match."

"It's not just Adam Scott and Tiger Woods," he said. "There's 22 other players here."

Bubba Watson and Webb Simpson will lead off for the Americans against Ernie Els and Ryo Ishikawa. Watson beat Simpson in a playoff at New Orleans, and they recently discussed a desire to play with each other.

Bill Haas and Nick Watney will face Geoff Ogilvy and Masters champion Charl Schwartzel in the second match, followed by Dustin Johnson and Matt Kuchar against a pair of Australians in Aaron Baddeley and Jason Day.

Phil Mickelson, the only player to compete in every Presidents Cup, will play with Jim Furyk against Retief Goosen and Robert Allenby.

Even so, Royal Melbourne was buzzing with the prospect of Woods and Williams on the same tee, this time on different teams. Norman made it clear, though, what Williams' role would be. Williams also used to work for Norman in the 1990s.

"His job is to carry Adam Scott's bag," Norman said. "It doesn't matter whether they are playing Tiger Woods or not."

PFT: Titans say they got in Newton's head

New York Giants v San Francisco 49ersGetty Images

Through 10 Sundays, the two conferences couldn?t be any more different.? The best teams in the NFC are obvious; in the AFC, the proposition changes on a weekly basis.

So let?s take the current temperature of the entire league by looking at the 10 story lines that caught our attention on Sunday.

Or at least the ones that caught my attention.

1.? Jim Harbaugh needs to teach John a thing or two.

It?s impossible to know whether the 49ers would have won their third through ninth games if they hadn?t lost to the Cowboys in Week Two.? Safety Donte Whitner recently pointed to the blown lead against Dallas as the biggest moment of the year for the Niners, propelling them to their string of seven straight wins, and counting.

Along the way, the 49ers have had plenty of chances to lay something other than a golden egg.? But stubbornly obsessive head coach Jim Harbaugh won?t let his team have a letdown.

And John Harbaugh would be smart to ask his brother how in the heck he does it.

John?s Ravens follow big wins with flat performances, losing winnable games after signature victories.? Beat the Steelers?? Lose in Nashville.? Beat the Texans?? Lose in Jacksonville.? Beat the Steelers again?? Lose in Seattle, um, ville.

Though I?ve previously blamed the inability to avoid playing down to the level of the competition on linebacker Ray Lewis, given that he?s the guy who has assumed the responsibility for ensuring that the dogs are indeed in the house, the head coach is responsible for finding ways to get grown men to take care of their business.

Yes, the Seahawks are hard to beat at home.? But when Jim Harbaugh goes there on Christmas Eve, a week after facing (and perhaps beating) the Steelers, he?ll likely make the locals feel like the unsuspecting residents of Whoville.

2.? Despite down year, DeSean?s absence hurt the Eagles.

Some Philly fans likely shrugged at the decision to deactivate receiver DeSean Jackson.? Since he?s having a down year and given that he primarily runs one route (i.e., deep), the Eagles had the weapons to win without him.

They didn?t.

After the game, running back LeSean McCoy confirmed that the Eagles missed DeSean.? ?With the type of player he is, he plays a big role for this offense,? McCoy said, via comments distributed by the team.? ?Any player that says we didn?t miss him is not being honest.?

Quarterback Mike Vick agreed.? ?Anytime you [don't] have one of your premier players, one of your go-to guys, it does, yeah it does,? Vick said, via comments distributed by the team.? ?But we have to respect the decisions that are made.? We wish it never had to come to that, but it is what it is and you still have to go out and win the football game.?

Per a league source, Vick privately expressed after the game that his 128-yard passing effort resulted from an inability to find a rhythm early.? So can any of that be blamed on the absence of Jackson, given that he wasn?t exactly having a Pro Bowl season?

To quote one of the most famous residents of Philadelphia, ?Absolutely.?

In the West Coast offense, a receiver who can run fast in a straight line and pull both a corner and a safety deep helps open up the various underneath routes for guys like Jeremy Maclin, Brent Celek, Jason Avant, and Riley Cooper.? Even if Jackson doesn?t catch a single pass, his presence helps fuel the overall passing game by creating passing lanes for his teammate, and for his quarterback.

What else can explain the curious career of Todd Stinkston?

For DeSean and the Eagles, the long-term relationship took a major hit on Sunday based not on what he would have done with the ball in his hand, but based on what his presence would have meant for the ability of his teammates to get the ball into theirs.

3.? Schedule makers stick it to the Jets.

This year?s Thursday night schedule omits a quirk that had worked to the disadvantage of past teams operating on a short week.? In the past, road teams in a Thursday nighter sometimes played a road game the preceding Sunday, requiring them to travel home and then travel to another city between the end of the Sunday game and the start of the Thursday contest.

This year, every Thursday road team will have played at home the prior Sunday.? (Ideally, every home team on a Thursday would play on the road the prior Sunday, balancing out the time lost to travel on a short week.? But we?ll fight our windmills one at a time.)? The Jets, for example, played at home in Week 10 before going to Denver on Thursday night to kick off Week 11.

But the Jets still got shafted by the league office.

By playing a Sunday night game that ended close to midnight in New York, the Jets have eight hours less to recover and refocus than they would have had if the game had begun at 1:00 p.m. ET.? Though it may not seem like much, every minute counts when there are only 92 hours between the end of one game and the start of another.

Though the flexing dynamic can?t completely erase this possibility, Sunday night games should be scheduled with sensitivity to the Thursday night schedule, and decisions to slide games to Sunday night should take into account whether either of the teams in the late Sunday game will have to hit the road for another one only four days later.

4.? Deja vu for Kolb.

Last year, a concussion for Kevin Kolb in Week One opened the door for Mike Vick in Philly.? Though Kolb was assured by coach Andy Reid that Vick wouldn?t keep the job, Reid thereafter decided to stick with the hot hand ? which eventually resulted in the Eagles giving Kolb the cold shoulder.

Now that he?s the quarterback of the present and future (supposedly) in Arizona, another injury has allowed another quarterback to go on another hot streak, and it could be another long year on the bench for Kolb.

Peter King of Sports Illustrated said during Sunday?s edition of Football Night in America that John Skelton will get at least another start, as the Cardinals try to topple the 8-1 49ers.? While it may be difficult if not impossible for Skelton?s redbirds to beat San Fran at Candlestick Park, the fact that Skelton has led the Cards to a 2-0 record after a 1-6 start under Kolb can?t be disregarded.

The key figure in all of this could be receiver Larry Fitzgerald.? Though the trade for Kolb surely helped Fitz decide to sign a long-term deal in lieu of hitting the market in 2012 (the Cardinals had no ability under his prior contract to use any tags to hold him in place), it hadn?t been clicking for Kolb and Fitzgerald, prompting Fitzgerald to recently complain about the absence of a high-end receiver who could absorb some of the attention.

On Sunday, operating against a defense that features Nnamdi Asomugha, Asante Samuel, and Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie, Fitzgerald had seven catches for 146 yards and two touchdowns.? (He arguably had a third score late in the game, but coach Ken Whisenhunt opted not to challenge the ruling that Fitzgerald was touched before sliding across the goal line.)

Though it?s not Fitz?s style to make power plays, the powers-that-be in Arizona are smart enough to know that keeping their key player happy is one of the team?s top priorities.? And if Skelton, despite throwing more than a few ugly passes that looked more like volleyball serves, can deliver victory and energize Fitzgerald, Kolb will get extra time to recover from a stubborn case of turf toe.

In fact, team doctors may give the front of the foot an extra twist or two every time they examine it.

5.? Mike Smith makes a contract extension decision.

Some agree with the decision by Falcons coach Mike Smith to roll the dice on fourth and short from his own 29 in overtime.? Some don?t.? Regardless of whether Smith is compared to the genius Bill Belichick circa 2009 or the jester Barry Switzer circa 1995, the move took a lot of guts.? (Actually, Switzer had the last laugh in 1995; the Cowboys rebounded from that blown game against the Eagles to win the Super Bowl.)

It took the kind of guts that become much easier to muster when a guy has received a contract extension.

And that?s likely one of the reasons why Smith felt sufficiently comfortable to do it.? Signed to a new three-year extension in February, Smith has the kind of security that lets him take the kind of chances that would be hard for a lame duck to take.

Maybe Smith would have done the same thing if he was seven games from becoming a coaching free agent.? The point for now is that a guy who believes the front office believes in him will be more likely to take a big risk.

That said, Smith now has to persuade the locker room that he opted not to punt not because he lacks belief in his defense, especially since Smith explained after the game that the move was motivated by a fear that the Saints would put together a game-winning drive on its next possession.? Though that can be regarded as respect for the New Orleans offense, it also could be viewed as a diss of the Dirty Birds? D.

6.? Glimmer of hope for Tebow.

Lost in the laughable stat line for the Broncos (55 runs, eight passes) is the significance of the 56-yard, on-the-money touchdown pass from quarterback Tim Tebow to receiver Eric Decker.

Apart from Tebow showing uncharacteristic, based on past performances, accuracy on the throw, Tebow delivered the ball without his characteristic catapult-style throwing motion.? The ball come out high and tight and it showed that the thousands of reps spent trying to reverse his muscle memory could be starting to work.? Though it doesn?t mean he?ll never revert to that looping Leftwich launcher, it?s a sign that, in time, Tebow has the potential to become a better passer.

And if he can become a better passer, he?ll become an unprecedented run-pass threat.

7.? Reid still needs to fear getting fired.

Three years ago, with his back pressed firmly against the wall following a dreadful performance in Baltimore that included the benching of Donovan McNabb, Eagles coach Andy Reid got it together on a short week, blasting the Cardinals on Thanksgiving night, 48-20.

With the Cardinals back in town after another sluggish, postseason-jeopardizing performance by the Eagles, the table was set for Reid to lead another late climb out of an unexpected hole.? Indeed, as the Giants faced the prospect of losing in San Fran (and the Giants did), a win would have given the Eagles a chance next Sunday night to close the NFC East gap down to one game.

In the days before what became a deflating defeat, a report surfaced that Reid basically will remain the head coach of the Eagles for as long as he wants to remain the head coach of the Eagles.

But is that really the smart approach?? Though it?s always wise to consider whether a new coach would make the situation better or worse, every football coach needs to fear the ultimate accountability that comes from chronic failure.

Without any real danger of being fired, Reid can continue to repeat the same old sound bites after every loss.

?[T]he way this team played is my responsibility,? Reid said Sunday.? ?We have to make sure we get it corrected.?

But what if it doesn?t?? There?s no ?or else? if owner Jeffrey Lurie isn?t willing to hold Reid responsible for failing to ever ?get it corrected.?

And since there?s no way to hold Lurie responsible for failing to address the fact that his head coach is failing to correct the team?s problems, Eagles fans simply have to deal with it.

Unless Eagles fans are willing to cast their vote of no-confidence by closing their wallets and turning off their televisions.

8.? Niners may not want the top seed.

With the 49ers knocking down every opponent placed in front of them, but for Week Two against the Cowboys, a slip-up by the 8-0 Packers could open the door for Jim Harbaugh?s team to twist the road to the Super Bowl through San Francisco.

But do the 49ers really want to be the top seed?

Though Harbaugh will never entertain the possibility that anything good could come from aiming for anything less than the best possible outcome to the regular season, the 49ers match up better with the Packers in the elements.? With Green Bay relying on a finesse passing game and with the 49ers cobbling together the championship formula of running the ball and stopping the run, facing the defending champs on frozen tundra makes more sense than playing them on the relatively pristine playing surface in the home stadium where Green Bay quarterback Aaron Rodgers dreamed of playing as a boy.

Plus, it?ll be easier for Harbaugh to weld a chip to his players? shoulders if they enter Lambeau Field as the clear underdogs, and it?ll be far more memorable if the renewal of the playoff rivalry features an ?Owens!? Owens!? He caught it!? He caught it!? moment on Green Bay?s home turf.

9.? It doesn?t take many dots to connect Jon Gruden to D.C.

It?s impossible to know whether Redskins coach Mike Shanahan is in trouble without having access to the thought processes of owner Daniel Snyder.? But we?ve seen the manifestations of his mind in the past, with no coach other than Joe Gibbs lasting more than two seasons during Snyder?s time as owner ? and with Snyder pursuing Shanahan for nearly a year behind the back of former head coach Jim Zorn.

So it?s more than fair to wonder what Snyder may be doing behind Shanahan?s back as Shanahan approaches the non-Gibbs witching hour for Redskins head coaches with a 3-6 record and five straight losses.

If Snyder has fallen out of love with Shanahan, Snyder could be turning his attention to Jon Gruden.? With G.M. Bruce Allen having worked directly with Gruden both in Oakland and in Tampa, Snyder has direct access to a guy who knows what makes Gruden tick.

Given that Gruden won a Super Bowl with a quarterback that the Redskins discarded, Snyder easily could talk himself into thinking that Gruden?s single Lombardi with Brad Johnson carries greater weight than Shanahan?s back-to-back rides on the coattails of John Elway.

Throw in the fact that Philly fans will be clamoring for the Eagles to bring Gruden back to town for an assignment one level higher than offensive coordinator, and Snyder may decide that if he?s ever going to get Gruden, the time to move is now.

Either way, Shanahan has to be wondering if Snyder is currently doing what Snyder was doing when wooing Shanahan.

10.? Pay the man, Houston edition.

We?ve heard plenty this year about guys who want new contracts.? In Houston, we?re not hearing much about a guy who?ll be a restricted free agent after the season.

A year after leading the league in rushing only a year after joining the Texans as an undrafted free agent, and only two months after it appeared that a hamstring injury would relegate him to one-hit wonder status, Arian Foster looks every bit as good as he was last season.? Despite missing two games, he has 740 yards rushing, and 445 yards receiving.

He?s doing it all while getting paid the minimum salary for a third-year player.

Likely motivated by a keen awareness of the fungible nature of running backs, Foster didn?t hold out despite being an exclusive-rights free agent, which means that even though he couldn?t have signed with another team, he could have stayed away without being subject to fines or other penalties for violating his contract.

Unlike Chris Johnson, Foster showed up.? Unlike Peyton Hillis and DeSean Jackson, Foster isn?t pouting or moping or missing meetings or disappearing on a treatment day to get married.? Foster is simply lining up and doing his job, and if the Texans don?t take care of him soon, teammates will begin to wonder whether the organization is unwilling to reward the men who truly deserve it.

Official says bomb kills 6 in northwest Pakistan (AP)

PESHAWAR, Pakistan, ? A local government official says a bomb blast has killed six people in a remote town in northwest Pakistan.

The official, Ahmed Jan, says two members of an anti-Taliban militia are among those killed in the Sunday bombing.

He says the explosives were planted in a donkey cart left unattended in a market at Mastak town, some 75 miles (120 kilometers) northwest of the city of Peshawar. He says it was a remote-controlled blast apparently targeting the militia.

Militants from the Taliban in Pakistan often target militias allied with the government in its drive against militancy.

Portland police and protesters in confrontation (Reuters)

PORTLAND, Ore (Reuters) ? Occupy Portland protesters and police confronted one another in the streets on Sunday, as authorities around the United States tried to close down encampments occupied by demonstrators for weeks.

Up to a thousand protesters were in a standoff with ranks of Portland police officers in riot gear near the fenced-off parks the Occupy movement had been ordered to leave over the weekend. About 15 demonstrators were arrested, but the confrontation was generally peaceful, observers said.

Face-to-face with the protesters, police repeatedly warned them of arrest or the use of chemical agents and impact weapons if the street were not cleared.

On their side, protesters chanted: "I don't see no riot here, take off your riot gear," "The whole world is watching," and "We are peaceful people."

Officials have also moved over the weekend to dismantle a protest camp in Salt Lake City, Utah, while in Denver, police on Saturday removed mattresses, cooking grills and tents illegally placed on a public sidewalk.

Seventeen people were arrested, Denver police said on Sunday.

Encampments sprang up in several cities in recent weeks in solidarity with the Occupy Wall Street movement in New York to protest what demonstrators see as economic inequality and undue influence over U.S. politics by corporate interests.

HEALTH AND SAFETY

Citing health and safety issues, some officials have urged demonstrators to take down the camps and others have used such concerns as reasons for police to force the issue.

Portland Mayor Sam Adams in comments to CNN on Sunday linked the city's camps to increases in crime and drug overdoses, and said an arsonist had used a camp as camouflage for his efforts.

In Philadelphia, Mayor Michael Nutter on Sunday ordered beefed-up police patrols at the city's protest site, saying conditions were "dramatically deteriorating."

He said communication has broken down between officials and protesters, and city concerns over fire hazards, litter and a lack of toilets have gone unaddressed. Added to that are thefts, assaults and an alleged sexual attack at the camp at Dilworth Plaza, he said in a statement.

The mayor said a $50 million makeover of Dilworth Plaza is planned and by opting not to move, "Occupy Philly is now purposely standing in the way of a nearly 1,000 jobs for Philadelphians at a time of high unemployment."

In Salt Lake City authorities moved to dismantle a camp at a downtown park and arrested 15 people on Saturday.

In Oakland, California, the scene of previous clashes between police and demonstrators, city hall issued a third eviction notice on Sunday. It warned protesters they faced "immediate arrest" if they continued to camp out in the city's plaza and parks.

The city offered alternative emergency accommodation at two local area homeless shelters, and laid on a shuttle service to one that was not within walking distance of the encampments.

In St. Louis, Mayor Francis Slay has warned protesters they have to decamp but has offered to continue talks to find a permanent place for the protest.

The nationwide protest movement, which started in New York in September, has voiced opposition to what the demonstrators see as an unfair concentration of wealth in the United States. Among other issues, they object to corporate excesses and bailouts of major banks.
