The North Carolina Dance Alliance (NCDA) is pleased to announce the 2011 recipients of two of the most prestigious honors in North Carolina?s dance community. Betsy Ward-Hutchinson of Raleigh will receive this year?s NCDA Annual Award, presented at the Annual Event to those who have made significant lifetime contributions to the growth and development of dance in the state. Renay Aumiller, also of Raleigh, has been granted the 2011 NCDA Choreography Fellowship, a stipend which supports the creation and performance of a new work.
Performer, educator, and choreographer Betsy Ward-Hutchinson has long been known as a champion for North Carolina?s modern dance scene. As a faculty member of Arts Together in Raleigh, Betsy is a founding member of the organization?s Rainbow Dance Company, the area?s only multi-generational dance company. She has also performed with the modern dance group Even Exchange Dance Theater.
With three dance degrees to her name (B.A. in Dance, Meredith College; B.S. in Dance Education, UNC-Charlotte; M.A. in Dance Education, UNC-Greensboro), Betsy has been instrumental in the development of North Carolina?s dance education curriculum. After helping establish the Enloe Dance Ensemble at Enloe High School in Raleigh, she now oversees dance instruction at Cary Academy.
Betsy?s choreography has been featured at numerous dance events in North Carolina and beyond. In May 2004, she founded NC Dances, an annual showcase of modern dance choreographers from around the state. ?I wanted to?give the community an opportunity to see the work these choreographers were making,? Betsy told NCDA in 2006. ?An event of this kind is a gift to the students we are trying to involve in modern dance, and to the choreographers and dancers who want to share their work, and to the dance audience in general.?
Independent dance artist and Choreography Fellowship recipient Renay Aumiller (http://renayaumiller.webs.com) is currently an Adjunct Assistant Professor in Dance at Elon University, and facilitates dance classes at North Carolina State University and Arts Together in Raleigh. She graduated with a B.A. in Dance Technique and Performance from UNC-Greensboro, and in 2009 received her M.F.A. in Dance from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.
Renay has been a guest artist/instructor at several colleges and universities in southeastern and midwestern states, and has been on faculty at Beloit College and the University of North Carolina at Greensboro. In her as-yet brief career as a professional dancer and choreographer, Renay has already seen her dances performed at various arts venues and universities in Illinois, Iowa, Kentucky, Missouri, North Carolina, Virginia, New York City, Taiwan, Cambodia, and Italy.

Domestic violence affects millions of people each year. It is generally described as physical or emotional abuse inflicted by one's spouse, intimate partner, or housemate. A domestic violence investigation allows the victim to gather evidence in order to press charges against the perpetrator. A private investigator assists both men and women in compiling proof and documentation to pursue their domestic violence legal case.
Many times, domestic violence incidences are hard to prove. These occurrences are often "he said, she said" situations where there is little hard evidence to determine what really happened. Because domestic violence situations typically include physical violence, intimidation, psychological abuse, and the threatening behavior, many victims are hesitant to report incidences to the proper authorities.
There are many reasons that an abuse victim is hesitant to report the crime. Often, she is embarrassed about the situation. She may not want her friends, family, and co-workers to know what has been going on. Many times, the victim is so used to the maltreatment that she does not realize how bad the problem really is. Many victims are so intimated and frightened by their abuser that they are afraid to seek help. Their abuser may make things more difficult by threatening to take away the kids, withholding access the monetary funds, or sheltering the woman from her loved ones.
Nobody can make a victim decide to do something about domestic violence. He or she must make the choice to leave the situation and press charges if warranted. Many times, a victim will go to a private investigator for guidance before leaving. He can gather documentation and evidence of the abuse that may be used in any legal proceedings, including divorce and child custody agreements.
One of the best ways to prove physical abuse is through photographs. Taking pictures of injuries and documenting the time and date they occur is valuable and powerful evidence. Verbal or emotional abuse may be documented by recording phone conversations, saving emails, or installing hidden cameras. A private investigator will be able to assist you with this type of undercover operations that allow you to gather valuable evidence to prove your accusations. He may also interview family members, friends, and co-workers to establish that this person has violent or abusive tendencies.
If you should decide to leave, a private investigator will assist you in finding a safe place and social services that will allow you and your children to permanently get away from the abuse. Should you need personal protection for fear of retribution, an investigator who offers bodyguard services is a valuable ally to have. He can document the comings and goings of your abuser to prove that he is stalking his victim as well.
According to research done by the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), four women die each day in this country as a result of domestic violence. That equates to approximately 1,400 women a year. Domestic violence should not be ignored. It can have devastating outcomes for victims. If you know of someone who is suffering, please contact the authorities in your area and encourage that person to seek help before it is too late.

ENJoy: A Generation House, has been more than a two-year collaborative effort to design, build, and operate solar-powered homes that are cost-effective, energy-efficient, and attractive. More than a dozen-plus graduate and undergraduate students from NJIT's College of Architecture and Design (COAD) and Rutgers-The State University of New Jersey have labored on the project.
The house is now in a neck-and-neck competition since Sept. 22, 2011 for best in show. The grand prize winner will be announced Oct. 1, 2011. Eighteen other built entries, hailing from as far away as New Zealand and China, are competing in this remarkable futuristic display of what are arguably the best in the world. The winner will be the one with the highest score after the following ten contests in architecture (juried); market appeal (juried); engineering (juried); communications (juried); affordability (juried); comfort zone (measured); hot water (measured); appliances (measured); home entertainment (measured and juried); and energy balance contest (measured).
The competition is open to the public free of charge through Oct. 2, 2011. Visitors are invited to tour the houses in person or in cyberspace to gather ideas to use in their own homes. Team NJ's entry is designed around a central core structure designed to contain integrated heating, cooling and electrical systems. It is the first house in the competition's history to use precast concrete panels as the primary construction material. Why concrete?
Well, there are several reasons, said COAD Dean Urs Gauchat. Thomas Edison invented the first concrete house and it is certainly appropriate that New Jersey capitalize on the concept. The competition is also focused on energy-efficiency. For that reason, concrete is the best and most natural choice for a building material. "Concrete is cool in summer and can be heated efficiently and affordably in winter," said Richard Garber, NJIT lead faculty advisor, associate professor and architect.
The beach-inspired eNJoy house features an inverted-hip roof design for rainwater collection to support irrigation and grey water systems, an 8.2kW photovoltaic system that allows the house to be completely powered by the sun, and the application of universal design principles, which will allow the house to be accessible to people of all ages and levels of mobility.
Following Labor Day, the house was deconstructed, loaded onto trucks, and shipped to the competition site from its original building site this past summer on the NJIT campus in Newark. Upon arrival, cranes returned to rebuild the structure with the help of COAD graduate and undergraduate studentsand even some recent alums. When the competition closes Oct. 2, the house will again be deconstructed and loaded on cranes to return to New Jersey. Future plans involve reassembling the house for public viewing at the Liberty Science Center, said Gauchat.
Industry partners have been an integral part of Team NJ, donating significant resources ranging from in-kind materials, construction labor and more to cover significant design and shipping costs while simultaneously providing priceless on-the-job experience and training to students. Sponsors, without whom the effort never could have been achieved, include PSE&G, Northeast Precast (the concrete panel supplier), SKANSKA (construction management), Petra Solar (solar panels), J. Hoping to stem the tide of reported customer losses, Oracle on Tuesday rolled out its new Sparc T4 server line. Oracle claims the new line offers one of the largest generational performance increases in its history.
Oracle's Sparc T4 servers come preloaded with Oracle Solaris. The line is designed for enterprise users that run single-threaded and highly concurrent workloads. Sparc T4 servers let customers consolidate multiple application tiers onto a single server to reduce the complexity of systems.
"The Sparc T4 and the advanced clustering technologies it is offering is Oracle's answer to the need for a general-purpose computing platform," said Charles King, principal analyst at Pund-IT. "From an engineering standpoint the performance is impressive if it proves to be accurate."
Stop the Bleeding
Oracle claims the Sparc T4 sets a record in enterprise Java environments and offers a 20 percent performance advantage per socket across the entire configuration.
What's more, the company said its Sparc T4 servers perform better than IBM Power7 and HP Itanium-based systems. Specifically, in data warehousing, Oracle said its new line delivered 2.4 times better performance per socket than the IBM Power 780, with 33 percent better price performance, and 5.7 times better performance and 2.6 times better price performance than HP Superdome 2 with 16 Itanium processors. However, those claims have not been verified by independent parties.
There's a subtext behind all these numbers, King said. Namely, convincing Sun customers to remain with Oracle. Although one might think Sun's acquisition by a firm with deep pocket would stem the tide of migrations away from its product lines, King said the movement away from Solaris and Sparc has accelerated since Oracle took over.
"Oracle needs to do something to stop the bleeding. The marketing jargon around T4 is all about offering better performance than IBM Power7 and HP Superdome," King said. "Certainly, I think Oracle would love to get some migrations heading back their way, but personally I think the realization for that goal is quite a way down the line."
Evaluating Server Systems
Beyond speed, the new Oracle Sparc T4 servers offer built-in virtualization, security and dynamic threads. Sparc T4 servers offer a framework for virtualizing both instances of Oracle Solaris, as well as lightweight virtualization for applications.

She said ?it wasn't until after the reduction that in the lab work, the pathology, that they found that I had DCIS [ductal carcinoma in situ] in my left breast -- I was very, very lucky because [at the time, it was] basically stage-zero cancer. So I was very lucky."

Sykes -- who has 2-year-old twins with her wife, Alex -- said she wasn't prepared to take any chances playing the waiting game.

"But, I'm not good at keeping on top of stuff. I'm sure I'm overdue for an oil change and a teeth cleaning already."
Sykes said with a detailed history of cancer on her mother's side, she decided to have a double mastectomy.
"I had both breasts removed, because now I have zero chance of having breast cancer."

The rise in gold miners during last year's buying season was fairly dramatic.
From Aug. 31 last year through the following 14 weeks, the Market Vectors ETF Trust(NYSE: GDX), which is comprised of the larger miners, was up 28%, while Market Vectors Junior Gold Miners(NYSE: GDXJ), comprised of smaller producers, was up 48%.
Members of my service captured a bunch of those gains. That was at a time when gold itself was up only 20%, but looking back that was when gold started its trajectory from $1,300 in November to almost $1,900 now.
Gold-mining stocks then went sideways in anticipation of the end of the U.S. Federal Reserve's second round of quantitative easing (QE2) at the end of June, but have now broken out again, as the accompanying chart shows.
Why would the miners improve?
First, TIS analysts say the miners have had to deal with rising input costs, like oil, over the past 10 months.Looking ahead, those costs are likely to rise at a slower pace.
Second, the stocks are cheap.
Some are trading below 10 times earnings, and most have ditched their hedges. So if gold does indeed shoot over $2,000 in the next few months, as some have predicted, it's fair to expect margin expansion and good earnings growth in a no-growth world.
Gold-mining Stocks Under-Owned
TIS also points out gold-mining stocks are under-owned. The total value of all gold-mining shares in the world is about $240 billion, but less than 1% of all global pension fund assets hold gold or gold stocks.
If market conditions persuade them to double their weighting in gold shares, it would cause $300 billion in new buying that would leave shares in shortage.
You may be surprised to learn that most pension funds and individuals have not been investing in gold-mining stocks or the metal itself, even though gold has been the trade of the millennium. With short rates at near zero, and "real rates" (bond yields minus inflation) under zero, gold's lack of a dividend, a major consideration for fund managers, becomes less of an issue.
While it may seem gold can't get much higher, remember that this has happened before.
The move from 1973 to 1980 featured an explosion in price from $100 to $875. That was parabolic, and we could see it happen again if politics remain unstable, inflation swells higher as the Fed floods the economy with more money, and real interest rates remain roughly negative.
Gold rose roughly $500 an ounce during QE2. How far could it go if the Fed goes for QE3 at some point?
The Fed opted for "Operation Twist" Wednesday, but with the economy wavering, Fed Chairman Ben S. Bernanke may feel bound to go "all in" with QE3 at the next meeting or the one after that.

Because gold-mining stocks have lagged gold during the "yellow metal's" meteoric run-up, they remain cheap - so cheap, in fact, that whispers of a takeover frenzy are making the rounds of the investment banks of Wall Street.

UNITED NATIONS ? The new Libya will join the international community as a nation committed to peace, security, and democracy, the head of the transitional government said Monday, as world leaders pledged support for the nation emerging from over four decades of rule under Moammar Gadhafi.
National Transitional Council chairman Mustafa Abdul-Jalil took the floor for the first time at the United Nations, speaking at a high-powered meeting attended by U.S. President Barack Obama, French President Nicolas Sarkozy and other world leaders to assess the path forward after Gadhafi's ouster following an almost seven-month civil war.
Abdul-Jalil was at the world body as the new, albeit transitional, Libyan president ? an appearance that marks what the international community hopes is the start of a new era in a nation best known for its support of terrorism and the eccentricities of its now ousted leader. The General Assembly voted Friday to transfer Libya's seat from Gadhafi to the former rebel movement.
"I want to assure everyone that Libya will be a vital state, a vibrant state that upholds the principles of peace and security in the region, a state that respects human rights, and establishes a nation in which Libyans can government themselves and seek official position through elections," Abdul-Jalil told several hundred ministers and diplomats.
Emerging later from the warm reception, he told reporters: "From the place where Moammar Gadhafi tore up the United Nations' Charter, we return today and say that Libya, as part of the international community, will work to achieve security and peace." He was referring to the ousted Libyan leader's rambling 96-minute speech to the U.N. General Assembly in 2009 where at one point he slightly ripped up the U.N. Charter, prompting a rebuke.
While upbeat about the country's future, Abdul-Jalil told the meeting that "the road before us is still long and there are many challenges at many levels ... either because of the presence of Gadhafi or because of challenges related to launching the development process to rebuild and reconstruct the state."
"Although we are a rich country, we require assistance," Abdul-Jalil said.
The meeting at the U.N., where Abdul-Jalil sat at a podium flanked by the new Libyan flag along with that of the U.N., comes at a pivotal time for the country. Although the former rebels have seized control over much of the country, they are still battling Gadhafi loyalists in several cities, including Sirte, which sits 250 miles (400 kilometers) southeast of Tripoli on the Mediterranean coast. Gadhafi remains at large and on Tuesday issued a statement, saying in an audio recording that his regime is still alive and that was occurring in the country now was a "charade."
Qatar's emir, Sheik Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani, whose country was one of the first and most significant backers of the former rebels, urged all parties and sectors of Libyan society to meet "in some sort of a national congress to consult and to agree on measure to be taken to establish stability."
"Then only can they chart the course for the new state that the Libyans will choose to respond to their aspirations," the emir said.
Aside from the political and security issues, the OPEC member must also work on rebuilding its economy and restarting oil production that essentially halted with the outbreak of violence and an exodus of the foreign workers who man the fields. Before the civil war, Libya produced about 1.6 million barrels per day, and only recently has output from at least one field begun.
In addition, the NTC is grappling with the mounting humanitarian crisis in the country, with thousands wounded in the fighting and water and food supplies still stretched.
World leaders at the meeting predicted challenging days ahead for Libya, but vowed to continue their support.
"After decades of iron rule by one man, it will take time to build the institutions needed for a democratic Libya. I'm sure there will be days of frustration," Obama said. "But if we have learned anything these many months, it is this ? do not underestimate the aspirations and will of the Libyan people."
U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon told Abdul-Jalil "the United Nations will support you in every way we can."
The international community was instrumental in the ousting of Gadhafi, with sanctions being passed against Gadhafi's regime that froze Libya's assets abroad while NATO, empowered by the U.N. Security Council, conducted daily airstrikes to prevent pro-regime forces from targeting civilians.
Abdul-Jalil acknowledged that support, saying that Libyans "salute the international community" for its help and described the raising of the new Libyan flag in front of the United Nations' headquarters as a "historic day."
Sarkozy said he was proud to be part of the coalition that came to Libya's aid and "what makes us most proud is that among those who acted with us there were Arab brothers, Libyans, there was Qatar, there was the (United Arab) Emirates and Jordan."
"We simply are telling our Libyan friends, tell us how long do you want us to stay and stand with you, and we will do that," he said.
As a result of the coalition, he said, there was no massacre in Benghazi and no repetition of the genocides in Cambodia and Rwanda.
"All the dictators in the world should know that henceforth. the international community is not condemned to just speaking and will take action, and where necessary with weapons in their hands in the service of democracy," Sarkozy said.
Abdul-Jalil said during his talks with Obama before the meeting they discussed ways of boosting security in the country, as well as national reconciliation and moving forward toward a democratic system.
Those points are viewed as pivotal by the international community which, while cheering the new Libyan government, also stressed its responsibilities.
"We hope the NTC will also meet its commitments to create representative and accountable structures, to take action to investigation allegations of human rights abuses and to ensure justice for all Libyans," said British Foreign Secretary William Hague.
The top British diplomat also stressed that the turnout for the Libya gathering at the U.N., and the warm welcome that Abdul-Jalil was receiving, should be a clear message to Gadhafi and his supporters that "their time is up."
Gadhafi "must be brought to justice under Libyan and international law," he said of the ousted dictator who is wanted by the International Criminal Court. "No country should consider giving a bolt hole to this fugitive from justice ... And any country that does consider giving him sanctuary should remember there is no expiry date for the charges he faces."
