Sea otters deaths hit record high in California; shark bites cited

After being brought back from the brink of extinction, sea otters are again in peril with an unprecedented number of deaths along the California coast in the last year, making federal and state scientists nervous.

The U.S. Geological Survey reported that?335 dead, sick or injured otters were found in 2011, a record high.

"We?re starting to see a perplexing trend suggesting increased shark attacks on sea otters,"?Tim Tinker of the USGS Western Ecological Research Center said in a statement.

Shark bites?accounted for 15% of the otter deaths?in the late 1990s, but that percentage nearly doubled in 2010 and 2011, Tinker said.

Sharks have long shouldered some of the blame for the otter's?mortality rate, but the populations have also been thinned by infectious diseases, boat strikes and gunshot wounds, among other factors.

?If these stressors remain high and shark mortality remains high, then there is no chance? for the population to regenerate, Tinker said.

Sharks seem to favor breeding-age female otters, Tinker said, which could deliver more of a blow to the furry sea mammals? community.

The last official population index reported for the species was 2,711, only 379 short of the threshold that would begin federal consideration for being removed from the endangered species list.

Your Film Festival is the latest collaboration from Youtube and Scott Free (the film and TV production company formed by brothers Ridley and Tony Scott), following their critically acclaimed documentary Life In A Day.

This time around, they invite content creators worldwide to submit their best 15 minute short stories, in any genre or style, and of any format ? short film, web-series episode, TV pilot or other video pieces. The competition is free to enter, and will offer the storytellers a chance to reach a wider audience and ultimately, win a life-changing prize; a $500,000 production grant, plus a development deal with Scott Free Productions.

?Short filmmaking is exactly where I started my career 50 years ago, so to be helping new filmmakers find an entry point like this into the industry is fantastic,? says Ridley Scott. ?It?s great to be partnering with YouTube again for this global search for the next generation of exciting filmmakers.?

Submissions are judged by Scott Free and thinned down to 50 semi-finalists, after which the public voting opens, further whittling the pile down to ten finalists. Those finalists then have the luxury and prestige of traveling to Italy to watch their work being screened at the 69th Venice International Film Festival in August. Following that, a special film industry jury will name the grand prize winner.

But even little kids would be crying to go home before too long. It would lose its charm.

Now that I?ve had kids I look forward to that day (hopefully far away) when I can rest and look back on my tiny contribution to this special world. A world that happened to settle into a spot that was conducive to it creating life. How fantastic! And it will be enough just to say I was here. That I got to be born. That I got to live when billions of others didn?t even make it out of the womb. And that my genes (through evolution) will eventually be in every human on earth, just like our genes contain bits of ancient Egyptians and other Africans. No one thinks about heaven, but at the same time it?s all they want. But only if their lives don?t feel like heaven. I have what I need in this life. And it?s enough. And now I get to experience things all over again through my children. What better gift? But I?ll have had enough when I?m old. If I spent my entire life wondering where I was going when I died, I?d forget to live.

Taiwanese phone maker HTC has lost the latest leg of its increasingly bitter legal dispute against HTC

The US International Trade Commission (ITC) has dismissed HTC?s Patent complaint against Apple, ruling that the Cupertino-based company did not infringe HTC patents during the development of its iOS mobile operating system.

The ruling marks the end of the ITC?s investigation into this particular claim made by HTC, which was first filed eight months ago as part of a wider legal battle between the Taiwanese manufacturer and Apple.

In October 2011, a judge made an initial ruling that identified no violation of HTC?s patents, with the company withdrawing a fifth one. HTC then asked the ITC to review the decision, but it agreed to review just one patent, the one in question until today.

?Smartphone-related patents have a very high drop-out rate at the ITC,? noted analyst Florian Mueller. In my observation, only about 1 out of 20 asserted patents is deemed violated. The challenges that patent holders face at the ITC have contributed to the popularity of certain German courts, especially the Mannheim Regional Court and the Munich I Regional Court, among patent plaintiffs.?

The case is the latest in the long-running legal dispute between the two companies which began in March 2010 when Apple sued HTC for allegedly infringing 20 of the patents used in its iPhone. This sparked a tit-for-tat exchange of lawsuits and in May 2010, HTC attempted to block the sale of the iPhone, iPad and iPod in the US.

In September last year it bought a number of Google patents to strengthen its case and it also bought S3 Graphics. However in November an ITC ruling declared that Apple had not violated any of the patents held by the company, bringing the wisdom of the acquisition into question.

This most recent HTC ruling will no doubt please Apple, which is already buoyant after claiming a legal victory last week when a Munich regional court found that Google-owned Motorola had infringed on its ?slide-to-unlock? patent.

The Prostate Cancer Foundation announced yesterday the launch of PCF China, a research initiative that will identify, fund, and promote innovative research projects within China.

AsianScientist (Feb. 20, 2012) ? The Prostate Cancer Foundation (PCF), the world?s leading philanthropic organization on prostate research, announced yesterday the launch of PCF China, a research initiative that will identify, fund, and promote innovative research projects within China.

Working with established Chinese institutions such as the Chinese Urological Association, PCF China will conduct R&D into prostate cancer in China as well as encourage collaborations through the PCF World-Wide Knowledge Exchange.

The foundation will also hold the First Annual PCF China Scientific Symposium on March 9, 2012 at the Peking University Wu Jieping Urology Center.

The program, held in association with the China Urological Association, will feature presentations from both Chinese and American prostate cancer experts.

Winners of the PCF China Young Investigator Awards will also be announced on March 9, and the award will provide a three-year grant of US$37,500 per year.

Founded in 1993, PCF has raised more than $475 million and provided funding to over 1,600 research projects at nearly 200 institutions in 15 countries around the world.
